Hero League : A Guide to Kael'thas
Kael’thas Sunstrider, The Sun King, is a ranged assassin from the Warcraft universe. Like all Blood Elves, Prince Kael’thas was transformed by the fall of Quel’thalas. Desperate to save his people from being consumed by their magical addiction, he joined forces with the Burning Legion and now lords over Tempest Keep. In Heroes of the Storm, Kael’thas is a fire mage capable of empowering his abilities and dealing massive area of effect damage with Living Bomb. We are going to go over his desired talents.
Level 1, Fel Infusion. Whenever you activate your trait (Verdant Spheres) you gain 4% ability power and heal for a small amount. This helps with small burst damage and helps keep you alive just a little bit more in team fights or 1 on 1 situations.
Level 4, Nether Wind. This increases the range of Gravity Lapse by 30% and also refunds 80 mana whenever it hits an enemy Hero. While allowing you to stun from a safer distance, you also get the full mana cost of the ability refunded when it connects.
Level 7, Gravity Crush. Gravity Lapse increases the damage taken from Kael’thas by 30% for 4 seconds whenever hit by this ability. This increases your single target burst exponentially and makes you much more threating.
Level 10, Phoenix. While Pyroblast is good in some scenarios, Phoenix is just a safer bet all around. You launch a Phoenix to the targeted area dealing damage along the way. Once there, the Phoenix deals damage for 7 seconds with the damage it deals splashing for 50%.
Level 13, Pyromaniac. Each time Living Bomb deals periodic damage, your basic ability cooldowns are reduced by 1 second. This means increased Flamestrikes, Gravity Lapse stuns and Living Bombs.
Level 16, Sun King’s Fury. Your basic attacks do bonus damage to enemies affected by Living Bomb. This combo’s exceptionally well with your Gravity Crush combo.Lift someone with your Gravity Lapse, Chain Bomb, Throw a Flamestrike under them and then proceed to auto attack. Your single target damage will be huge and either kill an enemy hero or force them away from the fight.
Level 20, Arcane Power. Activate this to restore 400 mana instantly and gain 25% ability power for 10 seconds. While a lot of people like Master of Flames, I personally think this gives more burst and overall damage to your kit. When they removed Bolt of the Storm from Kael’thas this is what I gravitated towards and has been my go to since.
Kael’thas has strengths on both big and small maps. His burst damage is surprisingly good and he can devastate entire teams if they do not play around his Chain Bombs. Phoenix is a great zoning tool and can be used to disengage from a teamfight as well. In terms of maps he really shines on, at least in Hero League, I find him really dominant on Tomb of the Spider Queen as well as Cursed Hollow. Kael’thas doesn’t do well against huge burst damage or hard stuns/crowd control. If you’re looking to take down Kael’thas, stun him and focus him down. He doesn’t have a ton of survivability unless he can stun you before you engage on him.
Hopefully this helps you in your Hero League endeavors and helps you build Kael’thas properly!
