Let the skeletons rise! A look at Xul's Hero League talent build

Xul is the newest specialist to enter the nexus bringing death and decay with him. Able to summon skeletal minions to do his bidding, Xul  is a strong hero with the ability to lane, gank, and team fight exceptionally well. We're going to take a look at Xul's core abilities as well as an optimal talent build to provide the most out of his kit.


Xul's Abilities are as follows:


Trait: Raise Skeleton - Xul can raise a maximum of 4 skeletons that can last up to 15 seconds. These are summoned from an enemy lane minion either dying near you.


Q: Spectral Scythe -  Summon a scythe that travels to you after 1 second dealing damage to all enemies it passes through.


W: Cursed Strikes - Your basic attacks deal damage in a wide area and reduce the attack speed of heroes and summons by 40% for 2 seconds. Ability lasts 4 seconds once triggered.


E: Bone Prison - After a 2 second delay, deals damage and roots targeted enemy hero for 2 seconds.


R: Skeletal Mages - Summon 4 frost mages in a line that attack near by enemies and slow them by 30% for 2 seconds. These last up to 15 seconds.


Poison Nova - After a short delay, release poisonous missiles that deal damage to all enemies hit over 10 seconds.

The current talent build I go is as follows:

Level 1 - Shade: While Bone Armor is active dodge all basic attacks, but increases Bone Armor cooldown by 10 seconds.

(Great for survivability and helps you in duels versus auto attack focused heroes).


Level 4 - Jailors: Bone Prison spawns 2 Skeletal Warriors that fixate on your selected target.

(This increases your single target burst and helps with early ganks, It also synergizes with your level 7 talent).


Level 7 - Rathma's Blessing: Raising a Skeletal Warrior heals you.

(Adds more survivability to your kit).


Level 10 - I personally take Poison Nova at the moment, all though Skeletal Mages are rising in popularity.


Level 13 - Decrepify: Spectral Scythe slows enemies by 40% for 3 seconds.

( Allows you to chase down enemies much easier, all forms of crowd control are always useful).


Level 16 - Flowing Wounds: Reduces Spectral Scythe's cooldown by 4 seconds if you hit an enemy hero.

(You can get more Q's out assuming you're connecting with the enemy team).


Level 20 - Bone Spear: Deal damage to enemies in a line - or - Mortal Wound: Enemies hit by Spectral Scythe receive 75% less healing for 4 seconds.

(Bone spear is good if you REALLY need more damage, otherwise I really enjoy Mortal Wound as it sets the other team back on healing and makes their healer almost useless against the target you're focusing with your Q ability).


Xul excels on maps such as Tomb of the Spider Queen and Towers of Doom. He can also be great on Cursed Hollow, where the enemy team has to respond to either your lane pressure or your gank ability. Although he has seen some nerfs since his release, Xul is still considered a top tier pick in both hero league and competitive play. His kit includes and little bit of everything and is very experimental on a lot of fronts, being one of the first heroes to include a damage focused talent tied to  20, also including a new mechanic in the form of Mortal Wound. Xul has a weakness to Crowd Control as most heroes do and can be bursted down if he does not have his Bone Armor up. If you're looking to take him down, just focus him with your team, land your crowd control and he'll be down for the count.
